• Garden Diary

    • Monday Nov 11
      • The 2 large trees at the back of the garden shed were removed today. The mulch is in the front yard of the school and the roots are all grubbed out. Sad to see these go but they are part of the school’s landscaping plans to build a quiet are for the students.
    • Sunday Nov 10 Busy Bee.
      • Today we harvested the broad beans, some chard, some spring onions and some carrots. The brussels sprouts were disappointing. There were a lot of small ones growing on the stems, but they did not look their best. They are being attacked by white fly, so it was decided to remove them altogether. Perhaps we planted them a bit late in the season.
      • Spent vegetables in the beds containing the finished broad beans, cabbages, sprouting broccoli, and brussel sprouts were all cleared, and the beds prepared for some new plantings.
      • A compost bin was built using some old pallets that were onsite. It is located behind the container on the eastern fence. It is a bit rickety, but it will suffice for now. At present there is only one bin. More will be added as we get time in the garden. This will allow us to keep all our greens on site and eventually turn it into useful compost.
      • The second container, which was previously used by the school, was cleaned out. There were lots of wooden stakes inside. These will be useful for our tomatoes and a few other vegetables that need staking.
      • The large garden shed has a small cleanout, but still needs more.
      • The fruit trees were fertilised with some old fertiliser found during the shed clean-up. This may not be great stuff, but it will put some back in the soil. We will try not to use that sort of fertiliser in future and more to a slow release style which is better for the environment.
